NOVELL ANNOUNCES BROAD-BASED INDUSTRY SUPPORT FOR NEW HUB MANAGEMENT
STANDARD
All Third-Party Products To Be Certified By Novell Labs
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- October 7, 1991 -- Novell, Inc., today announced
industry-wide support for its new hub management architecture from leading
microchip designers, interface card manufacturers, computer makers and
network management platforms. The architecture allows users to integrate
third-party hub cards into the NetWare server and manage local connectivity
functions from a NetWare console.
To date, microchip designers Advanced Micro Devices, Chips and
Technologies, Inc., National Semiconductor, and Texas Instruments, Inc.,
are among those who have announced that their integrated chip sets will
support Novell's management interface standard.
Interface card manufacturers 3Com Corporation, Accton Technology
Corporation, Bytex Corporation, Cabletron Systems, Inc., Chipcom
Corporation, D-Link Systems, Inc., David Systems, Inc., Eagle Technology,
Intel Corporation, Intellicom, Kodiak Technology, Microdyne, Micro
Technology, Network Interface Corporation, NetWorth, Pivotal Technologies,
Inc., Proteon, Inc., Raylan Corporation, Standard Microsystems Corporation,
SynOptics Communications, and Ungermann-Bass, Inc., have expressed support
for the hub management standard.
Computer manufacturers AST Research, Inc., Cubix Corporation and Compaq
Computer Corporation plan to seek compatibility certification between their
systems and Novell's hub management standard.
SNMP-based network management solutions from Cabletron, NetLabs, Inc.,
Racal Datacom, SunConnect (a Sun Microsystems business), The Wollongong
Group, Inc., are compatible with the SNMP (Simple Network Management
Protocol) software contained in the NetWare hub architecture, allowing
these hubs to be managed from a central site.
"Users are best served when they can choose from a variety of solutions, so
it's gratifying to see so many technology leaders supporting our hub
management architecture," said Duane Murray, vice president and general
manager of Novell's Network Management Products Division. "This
announcement creates a new benchmark in manageable structured wiring
technology, one that promises to lower the cost of connectivity through
integration of the newest silicon solutions with Novell's operating system
and network management technology."
HUB DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM AND NOVELL LABS CERTIFICATION
Novell has instituted a development program to identify additional vendors
whose technologies add value to the manageable hub architecture, supply
them with complete interface specifications, work with them to develop
compatible drivers, and assure that their products are compatible with the
NetWare environment through Novell Labs certification.
Novell Labs certification programs assure customers that networking
components from third-party developers are compatible with the NetWare
network computing environment.
"Certification gives users confidence that they can build their networks
with components from a variety of vendors and expect full compatibility
with the NetWare environment," said Dave Owen, Novell vice president and
head of Novell labs. "Since its inception, Novell Labs has certified more
than 1700 products from approximately 400 vendors. It has contributed
significantly to the overall growth of the network computing industry and
to customer satisfaction."
The hub development program begins November 1, 1991. Interested third-party
developers can obtain information about the program and about certification
by contacting Novell Labs at 801-429-5544.
Novell's Network Management Products Division provides monitoring, analysis
and management solutions for computer network managers, service
organizations and software developers. Its products include the LANalyzer
network analyzer and the LANtern network monitoring system.
Novell, Inc., (NASDAQ: NOVL) develops NetWare systems software products
that manage and control the sharing of data across a variety of network
computing environments, including computer workgroups, departmental
networks and business-wide information systems.
